Tourists flock here for its sandy beaches, the mountain villages of the Madonie just inland, and the resorts that dot the shoreline. The town itself is a medieval jewel: narrow lanes that suddenly open onto the sea, elegant palazzi, churches at every turn, and food rooted in local tradition. At its heart stands one monument above all\u2014the Norman cathedral.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cefal\u00f9 takes its name from the Greek <em>kefal\u00e8<\/em>, \u201chead,\u201d a nod to the promontory that towers over the town. With a population of just over 13,000, its historic center can be crossed in minutes. From the beach, Corso Ruggero leads straight to the cathedral, with side streets that frame postcard glimpses of the water.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Cefal\u00f9 and Its Cathedral, The Charming Town Just Steps from the Sea \u2013 by Giuliano Lodato\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CMAGLaabIns?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along the way you\u2019ll pass the Church of Santa Maria della Catena and the Osterio Magno, believed to have been King Ruggero II\u2019s residence. Just off Via 25 Novembre 1856 lies the medieval wash house, once fed by the Cefalino River. A Latin inscription at its entrance still reads: \u201cHere flows Cefalino, healthier than any other river, purer than silver, colder than snow.\u201d Legend says the river was born from the tears of a nymph who regretted killing her unfaithful lover.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_791070\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lavocedinewyork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_0654-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-791070\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sub>Cathedral of Cefal\u00f9<\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the cathedral appears, massive and commanding, seemingly resting against the mountain behind it. With its towers, narrow slits and heavy stone walls, it has the look of a fortress as much as a church. The Cathedral of Cefal\u00f9 is considered one of Sicily\u2019s Arab-Norman masterpieces, a style born of the encounter between two cultures. Together with Monreale Cathedral and the Palatine Chapel in Palermo\u2019s Norman Palace, it completes the island\u2019s celebrated trio of sites, all known for their luminous golden mosaics of Christ Pantocrator. According to tradition, Ruggero II built it in the 12th century to fulfill a vow after surviving a storm off the coast. More likely, it was a statement of power aimed at Palermo\u2019s archbishop and, indirectly, at Rome. From the towers and cloister, the views over the town and the sea are extraordinary.      <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_791071\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lavocedinewyork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_0682-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-791071\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sub>View from a slit window in one of the two towers of the cathedral<\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cefal\u00f9 also has a place in cinema history. Giuseppe Tornatore\u2019s <em>Nuovo Cinema Paradiso<\/em>, winner of the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, was mostly filmed in Palazzo Adriano, another town in Palermo province. Yet Tornatore has recalled, with emotion, that the first shot and a handful of others were filmed here. With music by Ennio Morricone, the film follows Salvatore, a Sicilian boy devoted to cinema who must leave home to pursue his dreams. \u201cIt\u2019s a subject that concerns all Sicilians who leave,\u201d Tornatore said when he returned to Cefal\u00f9 nearly twenty years later. \u201cBecause Sicilians who leave, when all is said and done, always talk about the same thing. They come back. They bang their heads on Sicily, always.\u201d     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the film\u2019s closing scene, a village priest warns young Salvatore never to return: \u201cIf you come back, I won\u2019t let you into my house. Do you understand?\u201d It\u2019s a line that still echoes with Sicilians today.
